Water Aerobics for Weight Loss

Water aerobics is a wonderful exercise for weight loss.

WebMD suggests water aerobics as a “good non-weight-bearing [activity].” When one performs water aerobics the participant burns twice as many calories as going for a walk on land. In order to lose weight it is necessary to burn more calories than one eats. The buoyancy of water adds to the ease of exercise; the buoyancy allows participants to exercise while lowering the stress on joints and muscles. The buoyancy of water also reduces the chances of falls and injury, all while increasing range of motion and flexibility.

Water aerobics also has the added benefit of increased resistance. The water provides resistance to movement which helps to burn more calories than the same motions done on land. This strengthens muscles, which is essential to burn calories even when not exercising.

Another benefit of water aerobics is the naturally cooling property of water. This allows more vigorous exercise without overheating, while increasing endurance. This gives one the benefit of increasing heart rate, thus burning more calories and aiding in losing weight, without the added strain one would normally experience on land.

We recommend water aerobics for weight loss not only because it is effective, but because it is enjoyable. It is an easy exercise for people of all ability types. It is low impact and comforting; it adds to one’s physical and emotional well-being.
